by Bill Chamberlain
Percy Chamberlain and his cousin Ethel Reynolds had the responsibility of welcoming folks to every Chamberlain Picnic since 1956.
In 1985, Percy hadn’t been well since early spring. That year, there was a record attendance of 145. Percy had surgery a few days after the picnic, but he didn’t have the strength to recover.
It was very sad to lose Percy. We wondered, too, if people would continue to be interested in the Chamberlain Picnic.
We were surprised. People helped promote the picnic, and 146 signed the attendance book the next Picnic Day.
Attendance remained strong at the following 33 consecutive picnics.
A lot of young couples and their children continue the family tradition – which would have pleased Percy immensely.
1985 was Percy Chamberlain’s last picnic. Many people showed their support that year and the next.
