As a young boy, I always attended Aunt Ethel’s picnic (that’s what we always called it) with my mom and dad (Art and Mabel Ward) and my brothers Ted, Dave, Tom and Ron. For me, playing ball in the field was a highlight of the picnic. I remember one picnic where Dave Hamilton hit the ball out into the field, and instead of running the bases, he just stood there and laughed. He was as surprised as anyone that he had hit the ball.
Today I attend the picnic with my wife Helen, my children and grandchildren. Now, that my baseball playing days are over, I look forward to a delicious piece of raspberry pie made special by Mrs Riel.
